CAMILLA'S NEWSLETTER - April 2006

Some of you may remember that I once did a newsletter back in my pre-computer days. It consisted of black and white Xerox copies and a hand written dialogue.  Now that I am somewhat computer literate, and have the Richard Avedon of jewelry photography in Noel Chhut on staff, we are going to try a more sophisticated version.  We will try to do follow-ups as the mood or merchandise strikes us.  While our focus is obviously on jewelry, we will make other recommendations when it seems appropriate.  If you do not want to receive, just let us know and we’ll remove your name.

Keep in mind that this is just a small sample of our wares.

THE EVER POPULAR RETRO BRACELET.  Three or our recent purchases that I quite like:

Retro bracelets

17A810 18 karat stylized half moon shapes on the diagonal.  Warmish yellow gold.
18A011 18 karat heavy architectural slightly pinkish gold bracelet.
18A149

18 karat pretty stylized oval loops, slightly pinkish gold bracelet.

As many of you know, I love WOOD & GOLD JEWELRY and we see it as very popular this spring.  In general, I am very uneasy with long necklaces, as they tend to emphasize whatever doesn’t need emphasizing.  However, this necklace has oval loops of ebony and 18 karat pink gold and can be worn long or doubled and is very chic on. Invisible clasp.

BIG RINGS.  This is a trend we have seen accelerate, especially among our younger customers.  Historically, we saw the Italian dealers buy all these rings from us.  Then, when we’d be in Italy and see all the chic women wearing them, we’d wonder why they weren’t as popular here.  Well, now they are and we’ve got three good examples below.

17R955

Great Seaman Schepps cabochon ruby and diamond ring set in 14 karat white gold.  Bought from the original owner’s daughter.  Probably bought in the 50’s and there are ruby and sapphire earrings to match.

18R101 18 karat gold, coral and diamond.  Just the thing on a long tanned finger, or a pale one for that matter!
18R005

Classic David Webb 18 karat hammered gold dome ring.

GOLD AND DIAMOND EARRINGS.  The mainstay of any wardrobe.  We’ve bought three particularly lovely pairs recently.

RTRMXX

Classic 50’s-60’s gold and diamond earring with overlapping leaves in 18 karat and approximately 5.50 carats in diamonds.

18E024

A pair of 18 karat yellow gold and diamond hoop style earrings.  Each earring is designed in a yellow gold lattice pattern, set with (19) circular cut diamonds.  The pair has a total diamond weight of approximate 6.65 carats.  These look fabulous on.

18E075

Classic Van Cleef & Arpels from the 60’s.  We’ve owned this model before and love it.  A pair of 18 karat yellow gold and diamond flower shaped earrings with a total of (66) round brilliant cut diamonds with an approximate total diamond weight of 7.00 carats.

* As 2006 is the one hundred year anniversary of Van Cleef’s founding and there are various auctions highlighting their wares, we think buying a piece of VCA this year is a good thing.

GREAT BROOCHES

We have featured three that are perfect for day into dinner.

16B506 French 18 karat 50’s loose knot with diamond tips.  Knot looks like a twisted piece of fabric.  Easy to wear.
18B074 My latest favorite.  Beautifully carved owl in beige & brown agate, made by Meister in Germany.  Fabulous eyes of yellow diamonds that really pop when set in a white diamond face.
17B650

Fabulous retro brooch, swirled half moon shapes, French 18 karat.

FLASH! MARILYN COOPERMAN

We have been lucky enough to find two pieces of jewelry by Marilyn Cooperman, one of America’s most talented designers.

18B135 The paisley brooch, one of her signature looks, has 48.61 carats of emeralds and is set in 18 karat yellow gold.
18E131

The matching earrings have 24.16 carats of emeralds.

We’d be interested in your comments and any areas you’d like to see us feature.

As I noted earlier, this is a small sample.  Also, keep in mind that we are always buyers of jewelry.  Bring in your old jewelry you never wear, and we’ll buy it or do a trade.

MISCELLANEOUS RECOMMENDATIONS

As our friend Joan Helpern was taking the Ninth Avenue bus downtown after finishing her professorial duties at Columbia, she exited at 50th Street to take the cross-town bus home.  Feeling a bit hungry, she spied an interesting Italian restaurant on the corner and went in.  She later took me and I’ve been back twice since and would like to recommend Roberto Passon at 50th & 9th, 212.582.5599.  Delicious, reasonable and convenient to the theatre.  The bronzino baked in a salt shell is outstanding.  Then go see “The Drowsy Chaperone”, a comic musical that we absolutely loved.  It is still in previews and one of the producers is Jill Furman, daughter of Frieda & Roy.  I highly recommend getting tickets now.  It’s at the Marriott Marquis.

Many of you often ask my advice on what to read, especially if you like intellectual British coppers.  A new discovery, recommended by Bonnie at the Black Orchid 212.734.5980, is Dorothy Simpson who chronicles the doings of Detective Inspector Luke Thanet in Kent. They are out of print, but Bonnie has old paperbacks.  You can really wallow in these.

Another “gem” at 818 Madison Avenue is Celine Burn, Pilates instructor “extraordinaire.” If you’ve seen Gus recently, you know what I mean.  Call her at 917.294.9554.
