VAN CLEEF & ARPELS SUITE

While expensive on an absolute basis, this suite is considerably less than at Van Cleef, and is fabulous on.  This is the 100th year of Van Cleef's founding in Paris, and has caused VCA jewelry to be in particular demand.

19E732 & 19N733.  Van Cleef & Arpels 18k gold and diamond earrings (8.36 cts).  Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris, 18k gold and diamond necklace with 49.46 cts of baguette and round diamonds.

DRESS SETS AND CUFFLINKS

With graduations, proms, and weddings coming up, we wanted to feature dress sets and cufflinks.  This is only a small sampling of our wares.

19S796.  In the February Christie's St Moritz sale, we put in a black diamond skull and crossbones dress set, estimated at $6400-$9600.  At this sale, the set sold for over $27,000 including Christie's commission, and the devastated underbidder asked us to make him a set also at that price, which we have done.  You can have a set, which we have to make up.

CARTIER CHICKEN BROOCH

19B775.  I am mad for this tiny lapis and gold Cartier chicken brooch.  It looks bigger in Noel's superb picture, but it is only one inch tall.  Sometimes you don't want to make a statement, but you want to say a little something.  That's when this chicken is perfect.  Probably made in late 50's-early 60's.  This is a connoisseur's piece.

MISCELLANEOUS

I had a recent birthday and each year it seems worse.  I decided to do a complete overhaul.  I had a manicure, a pedicure, waxing, a facial, eyebrow grooming, a body exfoliation, hair streaking, and massage.  Several places to recommend:

  • Christina Condur at European Hair Design (24 E 73rd St, 212-737-3388) for the best manicures and pedicures in the world.  Have gone to her for over twenty years.
  • My hairdresser Chen Levi at Avi/Fifi (45 W 57th St, 5th floor, 917-557-0135).  He's a wizard at getting the kinks and waves out.  Monica (also at Fifi), can be reached at 201-836-9008 and gives glorious massages.
  • Susan Cimanelli Salon at Bergdorf's (212-872-2650) - all sorts of cares but the brow grooming by Lali is divine.
  • Tried a day spa Ajune (1294 3rd Ave ,between 74th St and 75th St, 212-628-0044).  Lovely body exfoliation by Angela and the best discovery of all, a powder in a brush makeup by Colore Science that she tried on me after my facial.  I almost looked like I "had something done" with just a sunkissed glow.  It is high UV protection and very waterproof.  No other makeup is needed but a tiny bit of concealer and blush.  I've tried the Bare Essentials makeup but end up spilling it everywhere.  This obviates that problem but has a similar effect.

I had two very lovely surprises with Netflix.  My sister told me to rent Flyboys, the story of Americans who went to fly for France (the Lafayette Escadrille) in World War I before the U.S. entered the war.  It stars the veteran French actor Jean Reno as the officer who has to shape them up and James Franco as a young flyboy from Texas.  It is directed by Tony Bill.  Then I rented the Railway Children which was a Masterpiece Theatre production in 2000 that I missed.  It tells the tale of three children whose father is mysteriously taken away, forcing the family to move to the country and live in reduced circumstances.  The children become fascinated with the trains passing each day and wave at the passengers.  It's a bit sweet, with a happy ending, but I loved it.  My favorite English actor, Michael Kitchin, of Foyle's War, is the father.  Both films are well worth seeing.

Also, I am continuing to "wallow" in DVDs of Upstairs Downstairs which is over 35 years old, aired on BBC and then, was on public television in America.  Starting out at the turn of the 20th century, we've had suffragettes, the Titanic, WWI about to start, etc.  The series is quite "racy" for its time, in detailing the everyday lives of upstairs (the upper class family) and downstairs (the servants).  Most of the people in our office are too young to have seen it.  Don't get discouraged when the first couple of episodes are in black and white.  This series was made from 1971 to 1975 in five seasons, I'm in the middle of Season 3 and I highly recommend it all.

I have not read as much lately but can highly recommend, The Naming of the Dead, the new Ian Rankin.  One more novel featuring the irascible Edinburgh policeman, Rebus.  I also loved the new Henning Mankell, The Man Who Smiled, with Inspector Wallander.  Both are available at the Black Orchid.

New restaurant to recommend, BG On Seven (212-872-8977), on the 9th floor of Bergdorf Goodman for lunch.  It's very pretty, has views of the park and is absolutely delicious.  Reservations are usually necessary.
