SPECIAL PIECE:  FROM THE ESTATE OF PRINCESS SORAYA DAUGHTER OF EVA ESFANDIARY BAKHTIARY

    Eva B

This suite belongs to Eva Esfandiary Bakhtiary, the mother of Princess Soraya, the first wife of the Shah of Iran.  Eva was very chic and good looking, as you can see in the picture.  This 18k gold and diamond jewelry was thought to have been given to her mother by the then young empress in 1951-52.  The necklace sits like a dream and so does the bracelet.  I can testify as I have worn the set twice.  I've gotten masses of compliments each time.  As you know, I'm normally not crazy about suites, but I love and adore this one.

BEADS & PEARLS

We had a beautiful amethyst necklace that would have gone beautifully with our lavender shawl.  It has been sold, but we have this fabulous amethyst and ruby necklace with a lovely 18k gold clasp.  We love the combination of red and purple.

Amethyst necklace

We bought two long necklaces which are a bit unusual.  The Baltic amber necklace is one of the prettiest we have ever seen.  It consists of opaque squares and smaller faceted beads.  I see it with a heavy white silk shirt, corduroy jeans and a tweed jacket.  It dates from about 1920.

The translucent carnelian is something I'd never seen before and each bead is separated by a rock crystal rondelle.  I see this with the same blouse and rose velvet pants.  This is a big look for the money and dates from around 1900.

Bead necklaces

[25N777]  This necklace consists of baroque freshwater pearls in a size we have never seen.  They are big and chunky and fabulous on.

UNUSUAL JEWELRY:  Masonic Symbolism

Masonic jewelry does not sell well in America but is more desirable in Europe.  We bought this piece for a client of Marcella's in Europe and it was so unusual, I wanted to share with you.   This was made in the 19th century and the owner could wear it as a ball pendant when in public and open it up to form a cross when appropriate.  This is a really cool piece of jewelry.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER:  (Ashley)

December as the old song goes is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!”  Everyone is feeling happy and excited about the prospect of the holiday festivities and the impending New Year!  Not to mention that there are many rings out there just waiting to be put on a lovely ladies finger just in time for a summer wedding!  Shhhh…

I was feeling very festive for this newsletter and wanted to show you some gorgeous rings.  Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit quite like rubies and emeralds!  The ruby has been ignored for quite some time as an engagement ring, but I think there is something spectacular and seductive about the rich red of a ruby.  Emeralds are my mother’s favorite stone and therefore have always been a favorite of mine too. Sometimes they are so scrumptious in color they look like a bright green gumdrop as seen by the accents in our Edwardian marquise shaped ring, look how they make that diamond pop!

Colored engagement rings

Over the top beautiful larger “rocks” to show that the winter freeze is not too far away, although I am pretty certain this form of ice is certain to keep you warm!  A glorious cushion cut, an absolutely stunning Asscher and the classic beautiful emerald cut.  The rings speak for themselves, elegant and timeless stunners.

TO GIVE

Great gift idea — the British series Foyle's War has just been released on DVD, all 19 episodes for $149.95.  The series takes Foyle, played by the incredible actor, Michael Kitchen from Dunkirk to VE day.  Foyle is a detective in Hastings, England with his share of murders and other crimes even while war rages just across the Channel.  His Sergeant and his driver are wonderful too and watching this show has been a big pleasure of mine and I have recommended you watch it before.  I cannot stress enough how wonderful Michael Kitchen is.  Because of the popularity of the series, three more episodes going to VJ day were shot and will be shown in England in 2010.  I hope PBS gets them soon after I've thought about it and I think I'll give this to myself for Christmas.

BEAUTY TIP

I haven't been pleased with my under eye concealer for sometime and I was reading one of the fashion magazines and recognized my problem.  I suffered from the dreaded "raccoon eye", i.e. my makeup around the eye was too white. They suggested you use regular foundation and I did et voilà…no more raccoon eyes.  I used Dior foundation that I already had.  The same article stressed that your foundation should contain silicone, I forget why, so I took myself off to Barney's and got Armani designer foundation which I must confess is wonderful and while it has a designer price you only use a little bit.

NEW FIND (Jane)

I got a gift certificate to Intimacy which is up on 91st & Madison for a bra fitting.   Life changing.   Their philosophy is a "holistic" fitting and they do not use a tape measure.   I was fitted and tried on at least a dozen bras before settling on my two favorites.   I had been wearing the wrong size for years, which I was told is a very common mistake as 85% of women are wearing the wrong size!   My new bras are life changing and amazing. I feel taller and thinner and comfortable…something I have not felt in a long time! Intimacy has stores all across the United States.  Please visit their website and speak with Stephanie at the New York store, she is wonderful and tell her Jane sent you!

TO READ

Necessary as Blood by Deborah Crombie, this is her thirteenth featuring Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James of Scotland Yard and it's a doozy.  Wonderful read and you get to know Gemma and Duncan and their blended family even better.  They are dealing with a disappearance and a murder in London's East End and it's got all the elements to keep you hopping.  Will they get married?  Will there be another child in the family?  Who is this diabolical murderer?   In reading about Crombie I found out she was an American (I would have sworn she was English) and lives outside Dallas now.   Wish I'd known so I could have invited her to the show.  You should read all the books in this series.

TO DINE

While in Dallas we were taken by the Tarts to a fabulous Italian restaurant, Arcodoro & Pomodoro (214.871.1924).  It has been in business quite a while but just moved into this new space at 100 Crescent Court, at the corner of Maple and McKinney.  It was delicious and I had skate which was yummy.

Usually when you think of writing a review, it should be a new “in” place.  Well quite the contrary for me, what is old is new.  My pick is Vivolo (212.717.4700).  Talk about old world Italian with great service, this is the place.  Located in a small townhouse between Park and Lexington Avenues on east 74th street you can not ask for a more intimate setting.  The food is great and the prices are even better.  The other night I had a great piece of tuna with a wonderful light blend of tomatoes, olives and Italian seasoning.  My starter was an eggplant rollatini.  The portions are not stingy.  My dinner guest said it was the best sea bass that he has ever had.  The desserts are your classics for Italian, ricotta cheese cake, tartufo, chocolate mousse, sorbet, etc.  My friends have teased me in the past that Vivolo is old (as in the crowd), not trendy enough and that I need to branch out.  Well after having gone to my share of the “in” places where I feel that I have been robbed, eaten food that I not only cannot pronounce, nor identify.  I highly recommend Vivolo and yes my friends may be right I am getting older but I hope also wiser.  (Gus)

TO VISIT

I am sure you are probably aware of the luxury shopping sites, Gilt Groupe, Rue La La and HauteLook.  They have designer finds at incredible prices but you have to act quickly as the prizes go quickly.  One negative — if you return something you only get a credit for future purchases, so you need to be a little more sure.  They have great stuff, not just clothes but for the home also.

EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY!  (Jane)

We are doing our part to minimize our carbon footprint here at Camilla Dietz Bergeron, Ltd.   One step at a time…Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.   If you have any of our yellow jewelry boxes or pouches cluttering up your closets, please let us know!  We will gladly accept them to reuse them.  In a roundabout kind of way, estate jewelry is "recycled" jewelry so keep us in mind when you are ready to trade in or sell your unused jewelry!  Please contact Jane to arrange an appointment to sell or a pick up or delivery of your old boxes and pouches.

"TRIGGER" MENDEL FOX

We have a new little inhabitant (although he is growing like a weed) of our kennel.  Ashley got a little lab puppy from an adoption agency.  He is called "Trigger" and is in the office when he is not in doggie daycare.
