CAMILLA'S NEWSLETTER - January 2009

Happy New Year.  Let's hope for a more prosperous 2009.

I recently received the following email from a client which made my week.  We want all of you to enjoy your jewelry and feel extra special when you put it on.

"Last evening I went to a terrific event on the Island and had the occasion to wear Verdura cuffs, Sterlé coral brooch and Schlumberger earrings.  Ten years ago I didn't even know what these were.  I had a taffeta calf length skirt and cashmere boatneck sweater.  The jewelry was perfect.  All thanks to you."

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL EARRINGS

We've got some real winners this month.  First a pair of mabe pearls surrounded by 14k gold leaves [23E458].  Then a pair of Trianon shells, set in 18k gold with London blue topaz [23E338], last we have a pair of pale pale green beryl and stained brown pearl earrngs which, while unsigned, we believe to be part of the Seaman Schepps bamboo collection c. 1950 [23E516].

SIGNED EARRINGS

We have some lovely signed earrings this month.  First a pair of Elizabeth Locke earrings, phrenite intaglios flanked by moonstones set in 18k gold [23E412], then a David Webb 18k gold in a quatrefoil design [23E457].  Then some of you may recognize the last ones by Aldo Cipullo for Cartier, a heart and a diamond [23E500].  He made these around 1960 and did a spade and club also.  I have all four and love to mix them.  For the less adventurous or non card players we have a matched set of 2 hearts, which are just divine.

DANGLE EARRINGS FOR THE NON-PIERCED GIRL

As you probably know it is much harder to find a dangle earring in a clip style than in a pierced.  This month we are featuring two here plus a 19th century style below.  I love the ones on the left [23E418] so much that I took them on holiday to Florida over Christmas.  They are ivory hoops set with 18k gold and diamonds and are a wonderful addition to any wardrobe.  The other pair [23E307] are also gold and diamonds but the hoops are a sort of teal blue hardstone.

ANTIQUE EARRINGS

We bought a marvelous pair of antique earrings c. 1880 [23E394].  Each has two precious topazes surrounded by a total of 200 old european cut diamonds weighing approximately 7.28 cts set in silver topped gold.  They have been converted to clip backs.  These earrings are all you need — no necklace, no brooch.

TORSADE BRACELETS

One of the things we love about torsade bracelets is that you can twist or not depending on how you want it to fit.  One other plus is when it is pearls it is a way to avoid the dowager look of many pearl bracelets.  We bought both of these braceletas from a lovely estate.  The first [23A493] has 17 strands of dyed gray freshwater pearls with a big fun clasp and with a cushion cut kunzite set in an amusing gold setting.  The second

[23A478] is in cultured pearls with an 18k gold clasp set with diamonds and a big cushion cut rubelite.

SEAMAN SCHEPPS BROOCHES

We were lucky to buy two old Seaman Schepps brooches, probably made around 1950.  The first [23B508] is made of two irregular shaped pieces of petrified wood and 14k gold.  The other [23B513] is not signed but we believe it to be part of the Schepps bamboo collection like the earrings above.  It consists of two pieces of light green polished beryl flanking a piece of 14k gold shaped like a piece of bamboo.

FABULOUS FRENCH NECKLACE

It was fun when we bought this necklace as everybody tried it on and it looked good on all.  It was made in the 40's, three goose neck chains interlooped with approximately 1.24 cts of diamonds in the center [23N539].

BIG FUNKY RINGS

We've chosen three big funky rings this month.  The first [20R044] is a big 18k yellow gold ring with some diamonds, size 6 1/2. The second [22R422] by Cartier is a gold and malachite pyramid, size 7.  The last one [22R914] is a big abstract gold blossom, size 8 1/2.  These rings are conversation pieces and are worn without other rings on that hand.

TWO USEFUL WEARABLE BROOCHES

The first is carved rock crystal and diamonds set in platinum, scallop shaped [21B937].  Small but elegant and perfect, exquisite workmanship.  The other [23B184] is an Elsa Peretti, Tiffany, gold zig zag brooch set with diamonds, which is more unusual to find than plain.

MISCELLANEOUS GOLD JEWELRY

The first bracelet [23A445] has double oval gold links with one side textured and one smooth.  This Omega quartz watch [22W806] is from the 70's with an oval tiger's eye face.  It is textured 18k gold with a lizard strap and the original 18k gold buckle.  The last bracelet is a sort of curvy 18k gold snake with diamonds.

SHAGREEN CUFF

I know we featured them last month but they are so fun.  I wore this one over Christmas and got many compliments, as have others who got them.  This one is a small one and is a sort of yellowish fleshy color with an old cameo as the accent [23A563].  We have others including lovely ones with snakes.

Here's a money saving tip.  Why don't you look in your jewelry box and see if you have a charm or a brooch you don't wear which might work as a decoration on a shagreen cuff? We get the cuffs in myriad colors and Marcella and I would be happy to design one especially for you.  Call us and we will discuss.

PURPLE IS THE COLOR

Michael Gomez has made two fun pieces in the color of the season.  The amethyst pendant is festooned with a little 18k gold snake with a diamond eye.  The earrings are in a similar style but Michael has put the little snakes on the back side.  This can be changed.  I would personally have one snake on the front and one on the back.

If you remember, I got an eggplant colored coat last year and a shawl bordered in that color and I loved wearing them and am enjoying them again.  This year I bought a bright purple cardigan which I'm wearing over my white Mossimo T-Shirt from Target.  I also bought a plum jacket at Roundabout, the resale shop.

Also shop your closet to save money.  I found a beautiful scarf in pink and lavender which I originally bought for the pink; now I love the lavender with my lavender cashmere sweater from 3 years ago.  I also found a "hot purple" silk scarf I totally forgot I had.  A friend told me she found a purple cashmere dress from 10 years ago, so shop that closet and see what can be recycled.  A nice piece of jewelry always helps in dressing up an old frock.

When Gus recently bought an estate, I was quick to filch a little cat pendant with an amethyst body.  I have it on today with black and white and it looks divine.

TO SHOP

I have gone back to Lancôme mascara.  I like both Extreme and Hypnose; both lengthen, add fullness, and do not clump.  I do not know which is supposed to do what.  I do not know why I cheated on Lancôme in the first place.

In early December I got an SOS call from my sister in Georgia.  They could not find my brother-in-law's Nivea cream anywhere and he was almost out.  I jumped on my trusty scooter and hit all the local drugstores but couldn't find it; success came on the internet.  Bill is a contractor/builder and is outdoors all the time as he also keeps up the yard and flowers and a meaningful garden on their property.  He is in the sun all the time and at 70 has almost no wrinkles and looks far younger than his age.  He attributes it to regular use of Nivea Advanced Wrinkle Reducer Day Cream with SPF 8.  I don't know but I bought myself some in any event.

Last month I recommended Folex on the word of Ann Marie McNamara but hadn't used myself.  Since then we have more testimonials.  Jane's daughter spilled her luncheon chili on her white sweater and it came right out.  I cut my arm this morning and got blood on my beige cashmere sweater.  One application and a little rubbing and it is gone.  This is a miracle product.  Cathy Grier, Ann Marie's daughter was the original recommender and her testimonial is the best.  When your 2 year old throws up red on your brand new carpet you dont even panic.  Just get out the bottle of Folex and it's all gone.

TO SEE

If like me you missed The Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, put it in your Netflix queue and just enjoy.  Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman find themselves with cancer sharing a room in a hospital belonging to Jack's company which believes in everyone sharing a room.  They talk about the Bucket List, i.e. all the things you'd like to do before "kicking the bucket", they decide to do it.  Each man changes the other for the better and a good time is had by all.  You have two incredible performances by these splendid actors.  Maybe it's a little smaltzy, but I loved it.

NANCY PETERSON

Our heartiest congratulations go out this month to Nancy Peterson and Billy Ray Hearn of Nashville, who got married on January 2nd in a small family ceremony.  Both were widowed, have grown children and lots of grandchildren.  They started going out two years ago and here we are, Mr. and Mrs. Hearn.  Much love and best wishes from all of us.

HOLMES COLE

We'd like to introduce you to little Holmes Cole, the precious new baby boy of our very own Hobby Holmes Cole and her husband Taylor Cole.  He was born on December 13th, weighed 7 lbs 14 oz, and is now over 11 lbs.  I think he looks just like Hobby.  His first ride in a taxi was Wednesday, to visit CBDLTD.
