HAPPILY EVER AFTER:  New Year, New Ring

(contributed by Ashley)

CDB designed so many engagement rings in 2009 that we actually ran out of ring boxes!  Just because you are not a blushing bride does not mean that you cannot benefit from our custom design ring services.  Quite a few ladies have come to us stating that they want to freshen up their ring a bit, perhaps add some side stones or pave diamonds or even the basic complaint that my ring looks "too heavy" and they want a more delicate handmade look!

Very often, a lady will come in and say, "There is just something about my ring that bothers me" and they cannot put their finger on it!  Sometimes it is the smallest detail that can be fixed to change the overall look and feel of the ring.  The wonderful thing about designing a ring is that you can focus on the very minute details, changing the prong style or thinning out the shank or setting a stone lower.  Some ladies have reservations about changing their original engagement ring, but we try to keep the integrity of the original design so that you do not feel that your ring has completely changed.  Or if you want a whole new look, often times we have kept the old mounting and set them with a semi precious stone, so that you will never lose the ring that you said yes to!

Then of course there is the other problem that occurs, diamonds do tend to “shrink” after having been worn for so many years, in which case there is only one cure for that!

TO SHOP

In last month's newsletter, I agonized over my concealer.  Flora Hanft told me I should try Kanebo, only carried at Bergdorf's.  I did and I quite like it and the Kanebo girls are very pleasant and helpful.

I have still been agonizing over my eye makeup and think I've finally got it.  Some years ago before I could pop in everywhere on my scooter, Gus went in Sephora for me and got one of their own thin thin eyeliner brushes.  I liked it but still felt my eyes still looked washed out, especially in photos.  No longer.  Trish McEvoy sells a tiny jar of liquid that you dip this brush in and then use the regular cake liner.  You get a thin thin dark line, it is fabulous, and it stays on all day.  I can not get the same effect with the Trish paintbrush style brush.

TO READ

I am very lucky because Michael Thomas loaned me for Christmas the third book, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest, in the Swedish trilogy, Millenium, by Steig Larsson.  It will not be published in the US until the spring and individuals and bookstores have been ordering from London.  I tried Amazon UK but kept getting switched back to Amazon US and being told it wasn't available yet.  Anyway Michael came through and I read all 600+ pages over the holidays.  It is absolutely delicious and Salander remains one of the most appealing heroines we've seen in a long time.  I adored this book and am so sad he didn't live to see the success of this series.  I've got my own copy now as Jean got it for me in London.  I will lend it out selectively as will Robert Bush in Atlanta.

One of our clients who reads like I do was intrigued by my recommendation of Deborah Crombie, got the latest one, loved it and ordered all the old ones.  I realized I had missed a few, notably Water Like A Stone so I read it over the holidays and it is terrific. Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James take their blended family for Christmas with his parents and get in the middle of some particularly gruesome murders.  You will enjoy this.

TO DINE

I was taken to The Modern (212.333.1220) for lunch and I took somebody the next week.  We sat in the main dining room which overlooks the sculpture garden of the Museum of Modern Art and has very high ceilings and is very elegant.  The bar/grill room is also a lovely place to dine and is a bit more casual.  The chef is Gabriel Kreucher who comes from the Alsace region of France.  This is a Danny Meyer restaurant and like the others it doesn't disappoint.  The food is French/American with an Alsatian influence.  Both my meals were simply out of this world.  The service is superb; they even let me ride my scooter in and then a lovely man took it away.  The address is 9 West 53rd Street, just before you reach the museum.  It is a separate and very discreet door, so be alert when walking down the street.  I'm sure many of you have been but for those who haven't, this is a must.

TO SEE

If you haven't seen Blind Side do so right away.  It is a terrific movie and Sandra Bullock is just wonderful.  I wouldn't be surprised if she gets an Oscar for best actress.  This is based on a true story and men and women can enjoy it together.  Lots of football jargon but very understandable to the neophyte.  Left tackle which our hero plays is perhaps the second most important position on the team as he guards the quarterback on his blind side and helps clear a path.

You don't need me to tell you to see Up In The Air but I will anyway.  I think George Clooney should get the Academy Award.  I loved every minute although Jean slept thru the whole thing and was quite refreshed afterwards.

I think the best new show on television is The Good Wife featuring Juliette Margulies who was the love interest of George Clooney on ER.  She plays the wife of a disgraced state attorney in Illinois who has gone to jail.  She goes back to practicing law to support the family.  It is a really good show, Tuesday night at 10pm on CBS.  I also like Mercy, Wednesday at 8pm on NBC.  It features three nurses and various doctors and is a very good medical show.

PBS in NY has just reshown Cranford based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novel.  They have also shown a new one called Return to Cranford which is also marvelous.  It is amazing to see how ordinary villagers in mid 19th century England were so fearful of what the railroad would do to their quality of life.   You must see or rent these and I also think you would enjoy her books.  Big Love has just started on HBO (Sundays at 10pm but it is repeated a lot).  If you didn't watch before, it is the story of a polygamous family, husband and three wives and assorted children and starts off with the death of the wicked head guy of the compound, and coincidently the father of one of the wives.  There are many many plot lines all of which keep you glued to your seat.

TO GET

I have often said that I love my little cat Abba so much that sometimes it’s a close call between her and my husband.  Now there is a third contender, an inanimate object, my iPhone.  I had to get a new phone as my old Blackjack wasn’t working worth a flip and Noel thought I should try an iPhone.  As he is our technical guru I agreed and boy am I glad.  He got me a snazzy purple cover so I could find it easily in my pocketbook.  The phone does not come with a direction book but even a non-techy person like me can figure it out.   It is very user-friendly and I’ve found the AT&T vs. Verizon issue to be a non-issue.  I get stock quotes, Facebook, music, weather, and can even work the alarm.   I am never out of touch now.   I love my iPhone and thank you Noel very much.
