CHARM PENDANTS

We are taking part in a trend that we think you should be aware of.  It suits all ages as Eliza, Sochi and I are all ardent participants.  We are all wearing small pendants/charms on a thin little 18k gold chain.  Sochi has a tiny Cartier gold ingot, Eliza has a little round mosaic that almost looks like stained glass and I've got an enamel ace of hearts by Cartier.  When you are casual and don't need a brooch or important necklace but still want a little something, this is the perfect solution.  We have assembled 6 here all of which are gold, some with stones, chain included.  Some are quite whimsical or odd:  a gas pump, a lantern, a sombrero, a tambourine, a teapot, an ice bucket.  We love this look.

CORAL JEWELRY

With three Florida shows coming and many of you venturing South, we are highlighting some of our recent coral acquisitions.

21N279.  When we bought this coral necklace, it was very dull, but we felt it would polish up nicely and it did.  As we have mentioned before, nice coral necklaces are harder and harder to find, and this one from the Fifties has a coral and gold clasp.

20A930.  A little pearl, coral and gold bracelet.

21E429.  Ladybugs are good luck charms and these sweet earrings in coral, black onyx, diamonds and 18k gold.

20B944.  This special brooch is so well made and such a lovely design that we thought it might be Verdura or Schlumberger.  Alas, neither could find records of it.  The workmanship is exquisite and is a big piece of carved coral topped by a turquoise and divided by gold and diamond ribbons.  This brooch stops traffic.

BROOCHES

This Tiffany paisley brooch is the perfect suit brooch, and can be worn day into night.  It is 18k gold and diamonds.

Tiffany brooch

For those of you who love the Forties, we just bought this great retro brooch (21B464) with dark and light citrines and diamonds.

Citrine brooch

If you like cats, this big Tiffany cat brooch is very special.  It came from a collection of jewelry, pictures and other items all from a lady who loved cats.

You know how much we like turtles and this adorable little black and white enamel turtle is by Tiffany.

VCA NECKLACE

21N428.  A great necklace from Van Cleef and Arpels.  Rigid hinged collar in 18k gold set with pearls.  Sits like a dream.

BUCCELLATI JEWELRY

This Buccellati cuff is a beauty.  It is in 18k gold and diamonds.

Buccellati cuff

We are very lucky to get this whimsical and wearable Buccellati brooch in the shape of a pineapple.  It is amber and 18k gold.

TIFFANY BANGLE

This Tiffany 18k gold bangle inlaid with jasper, a sort of black-spotted beige hardstone, was in our Nov '06 newsletter and we commented that it was probably one of a kind.  Unbeknownst to us the woman from whom we purchased the bracelet had two and recently decided to sell us the second one.

RINGS

We have gathered a group of fun rings:

20MBK.  A cabochon citrine set in 18k gold and black enamel.

21R417.  A classic gold and diamond bombe ring.

21R131.  We have to have a retro ring.  This one in perfect condition, rubies and diamonds in 18k gold.

21R290.  An 18k gold ring with 3 pieces of lapis separated by chartreuse enamel.

EARRINGS

20E991.  These gorgeous diamond earrings have approximately 9.12 carats and are from the late Fifties.  The twisted knot design is one of my favorites and is flattering to most people.

Gold and diamond earrings

We just bought three pairs of Angela Cummings earrings:

21E469.  Teardrop shaped with a black enamel and gold diamond pattern centered with a pear shaped pink tourmaline.

21E448.  The matte gold cushions are each bisected with two rows of diamonds.

21E469.  The "zebras" are squares of gold with a black enamel design.

MISCELLANEOUS

My most favorite author, Charles Todd, which is actually an American mother/son team has a new book A Pale Horse and it is wonderful.  The policeman, Ian Ferguson, tortured by horrible memories of World War I manages to solve the crimes.

Based on my previous buys, Amazon recently recommended a book, the Redbreast by Jo Nesbo.  It combined two of my favorite genres: foreign cops (Norwegian in this case) and World War II/Nazis so I ordered it.  It is tricky to get into as it is done in flashbacks and the Norwegian names tend to not stick in my mind.  However, once you get the characters straight, it is hard to put down and I stayed up til after 4 on Saturday night reading it.  I have subsequently ordered writers new to me from Australia and Iceland now so will have more on those next month.

On the movie front, I just want to make sure you don't miss Michael Clayton and The Kite Runner.  Neither has done as well commercially as hoped but I think both are wonderful. While Michael Clayton could have been a bit shorter, George Clooney is fabulous and the ending ranks up there in the 10 best endings ever for me.

NEWS FLASH:  I am vindicated — 7 nominations for Academy Awards and they are reopening the movie in many theaters.

While almost nothing could move me like the book, The Kite Runner, I have reflected on this movie since seeing it.  It is an excellent adaptation of a very painful subject and I for one feel you must see it.

We have a new favorite restaurant, Bistro Chat Noir at 22 East 66th St.  The owners Suzanne and François were formerly with La Goulue and have made this charming brownstone restaurant into a winner.  To make it even closer to home, she is from High Point NC (Gus's hometown) and is married to a Frenchman.  The service is excellent and the menu is very tasty.

Jane and I may be the only people who didn't know about www.opentable.com but in case there are a few other uninformed friends out there, we like to recommend its services.  It is a restaurant reservation service done entirely on line where you can see the restaurant, the menu, get directions and make reservations.  No more hanging on the phone, getting put on hold and getting disconnected.  While it doesn't have every restaurant, there is a very good selection.
