CAMILLA'S NEWSLETTER - May 2006

We want to thank all of you for the wonderful response to our first issue.  Several people call or email every day, and it has spurred a number of visits.

A note of warning to our clients.  One of our main pearl dealers, whom we greatly respect, brought up some dyed golden South Sea pearl samples to show us the other day, they did not look dyed.  He cautioned that the "dyers" are getting better and better.  If you buy dyed pearls and pay an “undyed” price, you are getting a raw deal, as they are worth significantly less.  Example: I had a woman from out of town bring me a strand of gray pearls bought by her grandfather (now deceased) in Hong Kong.  She said he told her he paid $30,000 for these South Sea pearls.  I think he was probably exaggerating, as they were very badly matched, dyed, and baroque.  I offered $650 as I felt sorry for her and Gus told me I overpaid and he’s probably right.  Don’t buy serious South Sea pearls without a written guarantee that they are not dyed.

There has been an overwhelming response to the gold and wood necklace.  Unfortunately, because of the rise in the euro and the price of gold (ebony thank goodness has stayed the same) we will have to charge a little more for new orders, and that does not totally cover the increased cost.  We will stand by the original price for all orders processed so far.

We make three styles of ebony and 18 kt yellow gold earrings.

Wood and gold earrings

18E006 A pair of 18 kt yellow gold and wood earrings in the “shrimp” style.
18E188 A pair of 18 kt yellow gold and wood earrings. The earrings are designed wooden cushions encased in a yellow gold lattice work.

We are featuring some "signed' pieces recently purchased.

Gus and Hobby in Beverly Hills

Gus, alas, went missing in action when the photo taking started.  We have, however, caught him and Hobby in Beverly Hills.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We have two more shows before the summer.  Half the gang are off to Las Vegas next week, and then we do the Two Rivers Antiques Show in Red Bank, NJ, from June 9-11.

Two jewelry events we’d like to make you aware of.  The American Society of Jewelry Historians is cosponsoring with the Newark Museum, an all day event on July 10th in conjunction with the exhibit of "Objects of Desire – 500 years of Jewelry."  Ulysses Grant Dietz, my “cousin” and the curator of Decorative Arts at the museum, will lead off the speakers which include Janet Zapata on famous American Jewelers and Yvonne Markowitz & Jeannine Falino on Tiffany.  If you are interested, call our office.

From July 27th to July 30th, Jewelry 2006, fondly knows as Jewelry Camp will be held for the 27th year, this time at St. Johns University in Queens.  This is a great chance to get an overview of jewelry from recognized experts including my partner, Gus Davis.  Call 212.535.2479 or log on to www.jewelrycamp.org for more information!

Congratulations to Jill Furman! The Drowsy Chaperone got 13 Tony nominations and in what is surely a first, she’ll be competing with her father, Roy, whose The Color Purple, was also nominated.  Best wishes to them both.

Congratulations to the Black Orchid Bookstore for winning the Raven Award, the highest award given to a non-author by the Mystery Writers of America.  Another recent recommendation by Bonnie is Jacqueline Winspear, who wrote Maisie Dobbs and two follow-ups, all set in England during World War I.  I adored these.  Another big favorite of mine, Peter Robinson, will be autographing his latest, Piece of My Heart, on Wednesday, May 31st at 6:30pm at the Black Orchid.  See you there.
