We still believe the man tailored look and the army influence will be big this year. Our Bakelite and diamond jewelry works perfectly and we love the khaki colored peridot earrings with this look. Chunky gold jewelry looks good now and we have lots of gold chains in stock.

New York Antique Jewelry & Watch Show: July 23-26, Metropolitan Pavilion
Our dear friend Sigourney Cheek died on Monday, April 26th after a five year battle with leukemia. She fought like a tiger and wrote a wonderful book about her battle, highlighted by her large email following. The book is called Patient Siggy: Hope and Healing in Cyberspace and is available on Amazon.com. I got to know Sigourney as she was the co-founder and co-chair with Connie Cigarran of the Nashville Antique and Garden Show. We have participated in this show for many years and I was her houseguest on many occasions. All of us here adored Sigourney and we were proud to give a New York book party for her. I was lucky to be in Nashville for a Vanderbilt board meeting and got to go see her on the Friday before she died. We had a wonderful visit that I will always treasure.
Many of you knew Hobby when she worked here some years ago. She is now Hobby Holmes Cole and the mother of little Holmes. She will be coming back to work once a week and you can organize an appointment by calling us or her directly at 917.806.9166 or email at hobbyholmes@gmail.com. We are very excited to have her back part time.
Nicole Eades, who also worked for us for a long time, is now the mother of two and our Connecticut rep. 917.817.3209 neades@optonline.net
Noel Chhut, a valued employee has, alas left us for other opportunities.
We are happy to have this white coral "Rose de Noel" set by Van Cleef and Arpels, which is no longer made. Set in 18K gold with diamonds, the earrings [26E845] and the brooch [26E846]. This set really welcomes spring. At auction, each piece usually sells for about $30,000 as they are no longer available. Another Van Cleef & Arpels piece from the "Chapeau Chinois" collection is the bracelet [26A777].

Two of our own designs. The long necklace of aquamarine and 18K gold beads [26N648], was designed by me. The khaki shagreen cuff [26A680], with gold and turquoise, and two accent diamonds, was designed by Ashley. We love these colors.

The amber bead necklace [26N552], and the citrine and diamond cuff in 18K gold with accent diamonds [26A847]. These are two great pieces.

David Webb is always popular. These 18K gold and platinum-set diamond pinecone earrings [26E679] look fabulous on. This perfect cuff [26A853], in 18K gold, diamonds and black enamel. The 18K gold leopard brooch with black enamel, emerald eyes and diamonds [26B191].

We bought two pieces by Elizabeth Rand. We particularly like these matte gold earrings with khaki colored peridots [26E707]. The matte 18K gold cuff has a big aqua, highlighted by diamonds.

Green is always a good color. We bought these dreamy Van Cleef & Arpels earrings, which are chrysoprase and diamond, set in 18K gold [26E681]. I love the square shape. We got this wonderful 3-stone light emerald ring in 18K gold by Seaman Schepps [26R436].

Coral says spring. These 18K gold earrings in coral and diamonds [26E848] are Tony Duquette, and are very flattering on. The two rings, one in darker coral and one in light, with diamonds [26R844]. The mushroom brooch is also light and dark coral with diamonds in 18K gold [26B684]. I think we may have featured this little coral lion before, but I absolutely adore him. He has a big head and a tiny body [19B889]. With his emerald eyes and ruby tongue, he is precious.

We've not featured much platinum and diamond stuff as it seems to be a gold season. However, we bought this fabulous diamond Van Cleef & Arpels "Le Plume" ring [26R836], which can be worn on one finger or two. Then, we bought a diamond wedding band [26R762] which has over 6 carats of ovals. This ring says Hello. If you're the lucky girl who wears a size 6, this is the ring for you.

Even though Marcella is stuck in Italy, she sends designs, we continue to embellish the Bakelite we find. This month, we feature four earrings and a pair of bracelets. A dark and a light bracelet studded with diamond [26A184]. The two-color earrings, studded with collet-set diamonds [26E857]. The lovely domed earrings [26E650] also feature a collet-set diamond. The oval dangles are connected to the top by a beautiful pave section [26E719]. The Chinamen [26E717] have little marquise diamond eyes. All these earrings have gold backs.

Before Marcella left, she put this Bakelite ladybug [26B858] in work. It is studded with diamonds in gold.

This wonderful five-strand 18K gold necklace [26N429] has Gucci-type links. To wear with it, we have an unusual 18K gold “caterpillar” link bracelet [23A160]. We thought these tiger’s eye and gold earrings [26E656] finish the look.

Not really in our theme, but always desirable, the purple enamel titanium JAR earrings [26E337]. They are the desirable pansy shape.

Angela Cummings is always high on our list, and we have two great pairs of earrings: the black and gold reverse positive [26E768]; the larger mother of pearl and gold [26E767].

Summer is almost upon us as well as wedding season! After all the parties, the ceremony and the dancing it is time to relax and retreat on your honeymoon. Most newlyweds I know head to a tropical location where they can spend the day relaxing on the beach. Flowing dresses, sandals and tunics seem to be the uniform for the honeymoon. What better items to accompany these romantic outfits than long chains that you can wrap around whether you are dressing up for dinner or want to spice up your
beach attire. These necklaces capture island living, Persian opals the color of the sea and citrine the color of the sun. The other chains are set with large stones of white sapphires, aquamarines and tourmalines. Necklaces are easy to throw on and can transform a simple white tee and jeans into a glamorous outfit!
Much like the long chains there is nothing that quite sets off a tan like a great pair of earrings. The gumdrops from the last newsletter are light, fun and colorful, the perfect addition to any beach outfit! More designs like these are coming soon! For evening after you have been sun kissed and your hair is wavy from the salty air, there is nothing like a hanging earring. These wonderful pink tourmaline drop earrings are romantic and sexy. Have fun with your jewels, spice it up, after all it is your honeymoon!
The chains are wonderful pieces to layer as they range in lengths and are very reasonable. I have worn these earrings nonstop and have received many compliments on them, they look amazing on and as Camilla would say are a big look for the price!

Jacqueline Winspear's sixth Maisie Dobbs, The Mapping of Love and Death, just came out and is very good. Maisie solves the murder of a cartographer in WWI.
The 18th Donna Leon novel about Commissario Guido Brunetti does not disappoint. We discovered these ages ago when we had to buy them at an English language bookstore in Paris. You are in Venice and take part in family life, food, life in Venice etc. It is summer in this one and brutally hot and Brunetti is trying to solve a murder while being involved in Venice’s corruption. Buy A Question of Belief right away and read the series if you haven’t done so already. You only have to read a few pages before you are sucked right in, and in this one, the heat is described so well you actually start to sweat. The murderer came as a surprise to me.
Elizabeth George’s latest book, The Body of Death features inspector Lynley, reluctantly dragged back to Scotland Yard after the death of his wife. While this is a good read, her books haven’t been the same since she killed off Helen. I did, however, enjoy this multifaceted plot, so maybe she is getting back to form.
I haven’t been to the movies lately but want to share my "to see" list with you. Sex and the City 2 opens on May 27th and I want to see it. A French film, The Father of My Children opens on May 28th and it looks very good. On June 18th Tilda Swinton stars in I Am Love, falling in love with her son’s business partner. On July 2nd, I eagerly await the dramatization of Stieg Larsson’s second book in his Millennium Trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire. I loved the first one and know this will be great. In August I want to see Cairo Time with Patricia Clarkson and the super good-looking Alexander Siddig, with whom she has an adulterous affair in Egypt. On August 13th Julia Roberts stars in Eat Pray Love, an adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best seller. Finally, on September 1st, my favorite George Clooney stars as a professional hit man on his last job in The American.
I investigated the Limelight this weekend which is a neogothic church that was once a discotheque. It is located at 655 Sixth Avenue at 20th Street and is now a shopping mall with a farmers market and has lots of shops. The entrance to the farmers market is on 20th Street. Those on the first floor generally specialize in food and sound are delicious. Alas there is no elevator but there are other shops and restaurants on the second and third floors. We quite liked the Hunter Boot store and found a lovely pomegranate/sage room diffuser in another shop. This is a happening place. Information is 212.226.7585 and it is open 7 days a week.
Since I don't get around easily, I order a lot of things on the internet. A great find from Oprah is kikkerlandshop. I wanted to order a darling stepstool for my new kitchen, but I lollygagged for a few days and then they were sold out. I should have known to act quickly, based on the unbelievable response we got when our plastic watches were featured in Oprah Magazine. In any event, I browsed the catalog online and found a number of cute gifty items. This is a great source for stocking stuffers.
I have to confess that I got this idea from Oprah magazine as well. I ordered a top from Fabrizio Gianni and it is rayon with a touch of lycra to give it a bit of stretch. It is their classic v-neck with a high neck in back so it looks great under a jacket and the v-neck looks great with a short necklace. I ordered red and am quite happy with it, you can get it with either 3/4 length sleeves or long sleeves. The service was wonderful and it arrived shortly after I placed my order.
I wandered up the other side (east) of Lexington Avenue and here is my report.
Right on the corner of 68th Street is a Jean Claude Beguine hair salon. As most of you know my beloved Chen has gone back to Israel and returns only once a quarter. I go to Mei at Jean Claude Beguine for blowdries and got up the nerve to let her cut it also and was very pleased. I also had highlights done which turned out well. This is a very very good salon. Then you have my drugstore, Metro Drugs, where I get all my prescriptions. Most of you probably know Garnet Wines & Liquors as it has a huge selection of wines and liquors and the prices can’t be beat. They have lots of wine tastings and I happened on a wonderful rose from the Rhone valley. While I order most books from Amazon.com I love to go to Shakespeare Bookstore. They have a large selection and a knowledgeable staff. They have been very helpful with children's books and have a huge selection of thrillers from Donna Leon and Alan Furst to Lee Child and David Baldacci. The next block is pretty bleak, although there is a good health food store. When you get to 70th Street you hit some good restaurants with lots of seating outside. Our favorites are Lumi, Sette Mezzo (no credit cards—cash or check) and Bella Blu. On the next block there is another great bookstore called Bookberries. On the next block is a favorite of mine, Empire Shoe Repair, that also has a great selection of canes and umbrellas. Between 72nd and 73rd Streets is our all time favorite restaurant Swifty's (212.535.6000) and we noticed for the first time they have a few tables outside. One place we forgot across the street is House of Health, a leading purveyor of health food, including the Ezekial bread we like. Between 73rd and 74th is Paul Mole, a barber Gus swore by when he had hair. In the next block, 74th and 75th, is Giggle which caters to all baby needs and there are branches of two of my favorite stores, Dempsey and Carroll, selling fine stationary since 1878, and Schweitzer Linen which sells lovely linens at prices less than Pratesi. On the corner of 75th is d'Orsay which I didn’t really like at first but appreciate being able to ride my scooter right in and the food has improved a lot. In the next block is a place we haven't tried but intend to, Bleu Sur Bleu hair salon with blow dries for $29. It is very inviting looking. You can take a rest at the big Starbucks at 78th Street and cross over at 80th to stock up on provisions at Likitsakos. Warning: the cole slaw has way too much mayonnaise. Pureed broccoli is excellent as is the roasted vegetable puree although it is a strange gray green color so you have to eat without looking at it.
